How this calculator works

Stride length is estimated from height using widely cited ratios: about 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men. Distance is steps multiplied by stride length.

Walking time assumes a steady pace you choose, from an easy 2.5 mph to a very brisk 4 mph. For your exact stride, walk 20 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 20.

Tips

  • Most people take roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile depending on height and pace.
  • Phones and watches count steps differently, so compare trends rather than single days.
  • If you are starting a new exercise routine, especially with a health condition, talk to your doctor first.
