How this calculator works

The list starts with the basics everyone needs, then adds items for your trip type (beach, cruise, road trip or RV, camping, city or business) and weather.

Clothing quantities scale with the number of nights. If you can do laundry, the list caps clothing at about five days’ worth. International trips add passport, adapter and document items.

Tips

  • Pack medications in your carry-on with two extra days’ supply.
  • Check your airline’s and cruise line’s rules before packing batteries, power strips or liquids.
  • Lay everything out, then remove a third of it. Most people overpack.
  • Save your booking confirmations offline in case you lose signal.
