How this calculator works

For living rooms, the calculator leaves about 18 inches of bare floor around the rug and looks for a size large enough to anchor the seating area, at least 5 × 8 feet.

For bedrooms it sizes the rug to extend past both sides of the bed. For dining rooms it adds about 24 inches on every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. It then picks the largest standard size (from 2 × 3 up to 12 × 15 feet) that still fits the room.

Tips

  • Bigger usually looks better than smaller: a rug that is too small makes a room feel disconnected.
  • In living rooms, put at least the front legs of every sofa and chair on the rug.
  • In bedrooms, start the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving the nightstands off it.
  • Measure with painter’s tape on the floor before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8 × 10 rug is the usual choice for a queen bed. It leaves room on both sides to step onto the rug.

What size rug for a dining table that seats six?

Most six-seat tables need an 8 × 10 rug or larger so the chairs stay on the rug when someone sits down.

Can a rug be too big?

Yes. Leave at least 12 to 18 inches of floor showing around the edges in most rooms, so the rug looks intentional.
